what to consider old school, and how old is old school?
Masd90@aol.com
(Old School from my perspective is basically 80s hip hop culture. I sometimes refer to songs pre-84 as True School. Hip Hop went through a very interesting growth period during the mid-eighties and a lot of the identity or shape of hip hop today was influenced by what was introduced during this time. I refer to the term "New School" basically to identify younger heads that are just now getting into the scene or culture and missed out on many of the events / music that molded myself. "How old is old school?" Some hip hop heads might consider the late 70s as old school if they were involved in the underground scenes that were taking place in New York City clubs and neighborhoods. Since Hip Hop has many defining elements like Graffiti, Rockin', MCing and DJing it is hard to place a date on what is considered "old school".)

I thought I was the only one who remembered the real days of hip hip. I am 31 now and can't let it go. I still criticize rappers and their styles to the mc's of the early eighties when hip hop was fun. The first time I heard rappers delight, I was about 10 I think and was just buggin' out. I grew up in San Diego and moved to Tucson Arizona when I was about 13. Nobody even knew what breaking was. I played my Africa Bambata and other records in my room and turned to popping as my favorite thing to do. When "Style Wars" came out I recorded it and watched it everyday for about a year. The energy in that video made me wish I was in the South Bronx. The whole hip hop thing will always be part of me. I still leave my tag around my office and everyone wonders what it says and who did it. I wish all the new rappers and breakers had to go to a school before releasing an album or forming a crew so that they could learn about the culture and have more respect for the art. Run DMC, The Treacherous Three, Funky Four plus One More, Kool Herc, Grand Master Flash, Red Alert, Malcolm McLaren, Africa Bambata and the Soul Sonic Force, UTFO, Mantronix, Kid Kreole, DJ Hollywood, World Famous Supreme Team, Rock Steady Crew, Mare, Seen, Kurtis Blow, Russell Simmons, Doug E Fresh, Jazzy Jay, New York City Breakers. The list goes on and on. I guess I will have to keep rockin' my suede puma's and shell toes with you cuz I still got about 4 pairs. You don't even know how glad I am to see we are still out there. Oh yeah, you can't forget about the CAZAL glasses and the Kangol. Let me know if you need contributions to your site. Peace.

what is the best way to get some styles? what are the best tips to just to
throw your tag up quick?
NdUsOnE repp'n KDF
(The best way to get styles is to get your own sketch book and start working on your characters. Buy a few graffiti magazines or look around online for some styles but make sure not to bite. If you want to do a quick throw up for your tag then get outline tips and if you want to do fill on it get some German Fat Caps.)

I think your website is so hot! It has so much info about new hip-hop, not to mention the culture of true hip- hop and it' beginnings. I really enjoyed your story about your childhood and growing up as a b-boy. I wanted to ask you a question - what do you think about white people listening to and supporting the culture of hip-hop? I am a white teenage girl and ever since I started listening to hip-hop, four years ago, I have been a devoted fan ! Hip- hop is so real and the beats are always hot and it is not just a form of music it is a way of life, with a history and meaning, unlike pop music which is the steriotypical "white music" I have met black listeners of hip-hop who could care less what color I am, but it seems to be the artists more than the listeners who are biased againts having white listeners. It makes me mad! I understand that hip-hop is a predominantly a "black" type of music and style, and was created originally by black people, but why can't things change? To make a point, I don't think the Backstreet Boys, *nsync, or Britney Spears get offended if a black girl or boy wants to listen to their songs. Can you please tell me your opinion on white people listening to hip-hop and r&b and explain to me what the problem is about white people listening to hip-hop. Thankyou!

Yo, your shit is ILL! You got a nice mix of elements. Thats what I like to see! As a culture we need to bring it back, these days theirs to much fussin over DUMB shit and not enough over that KNOWLEDGE!! THATS THE ONLY WAY ANYTHING WILL PROGRESS .. and it seems like were movin backward! ITS NOT TO LATE, SPREAD THA WORD, GO BOMB! GRAFFITI'S POWER HAS NOT YET BEEN APPRECIATED. SHOW THEM WE ARE STRONG! wsup? we are a rap group trying to get big and we are just starting out and
we was wondering about machines that makes beats could you send us some info
on different machines that makes beats.
(If you have a little loot to spend try to find some old analog keyboards like a Roland or a Moog keyboard. They have a warmer sound then the newer digital ones. You can sample the sounds from these keyboards into a sampler like the Akai MPC2000 and do all of your sequencing on that. The MPC2000 is about 1,000 bones used and acts as a drum machine also. A lot of Hip Hop headz use this machine because it is almost a studio in a box and you can mix tracks down and dump them digitally with a few upgrades to it from what I hear. If your Moms and Pops is springing for some studio gear you probably want to peep out a Ensoniq ASR-10 keyboard/sequencer. This piece of equipment is fresh and you can get it as a rack mount or standard keyboard. I think they run about 3,000. If you don't have all that loot you can look for a used Ensoniq EPS 16+ which was the older version of this keyboard. Boss makes a pretty nice drum machine the DR-550 I think which is pretty inexpensive and handy to program your beats. For more info and pricing on studio gear check out the Musicians Friend Website.)

Yo what up to all the real heads out there, and much love to all the b-girls out there practicing mad hours to improve their skills in order to get a respected spot in this dope ass culture. I'm an 18 year old female that has been breaking, graffin', and MCing since I was in 5th grade. I just wanted to let everybody know that this culture needs to keep united, and websites like this one makes it possible for heads like us to keep in touch with one another and those dope events that are going on all over the country. Run this lifestyle strong! Keep it real yall!

the main logo...cuz i'm makin' a graffiti site
and need some wicked fonts....please let me
know....
thanx
breaka15
(Actually, I get a lot of peeps asking about our logo font. Well, the logo was created by one of my homies Sion who did the entire logo in photoshop. Basically, he markered out the letters and scanned them in and cleaned up the edges and added the fades using layers and the airbrush tool.
Another way this effect can be created is using the brush tool in photoshop and set the angle at 45 degress and the roundness at 5% or less and this will give the marker effect. You can then do your tag steady with the mouse and clean up the lines after you render the layer.)

this goes out to all the writers. i was just at Wal-Mart looking at some
"model" paint and decided to see if they would let me buy some. Guess what!
they let me buy them and check it i'm only 14. once we got out me and some
other writers blew the wall behind Wal-Mart with throw-ups. well anyway go
check out your local Wal-Mart and see if there dumb enough to let you buy
them.
(Note: I am not endorsing this practice but I get a lot of emails from younger artists that can't get a hold of cans. So here is your new source, we'll see how long it lasts.)

hey brian,
i am sorry that i have not been in contact in ages. i
have been hella busy in these last two months trying
to prepare for my year back in cali. i be home in two
weeks. but, i gotz some shit bangn' around my cranium
about this hip-hop thing. i have been checkn' a lot
of the headz over here in the u.k. and, a lot of the
m.c.s and deejays hardly get any love domestically.
if it ain't american, then it ain't shit. even on the
most popular tim westwood show on bbc 1, there ain't
no local uk talent showcased. its all american shit
and its not even the dope shit like common, dialated,
arsonists. its all about industry, big budget jiggy
fucks! to make matters worse, tim westwood is a
fuckn' wanker, wannabe playa, who is hanging from
funkmaster flex's nutz.
they gotz mad talent here like rootz manuva, asylum,
scratch perverts, on and on... locally, here in
sheffield (the home of gatecrashers and ny sushi),
there is a small scene of headz who got skillz. but,
there is hardly a place to go for these headz to just
bust freestylez and flex their skills on the decks.
i think the new chapter in hip-hop is to think locally
about it. over here in the uk, m.c. asylum is
petitioning the government to give at least 40% of
radio airtime to domestically-u.k. originated music.
This means that instead of fuckn' hearing eminem, dre,
jay-z over the radio airwaves 24-7 one can hear more
ninja tunes representatives.
i guess my motivation for writing this shit is that i
am fed up of all the bullshit and the obstacles
preventing hip-hop from maturing. i know a lot of
headz here in sheffield who would like to have a forum
or a venue for open mic sessions where they can just
demonstrate and refine their skillz. but, because of
just plain ignorance (which i have found to be global)
and the almighty dollar, hip-hop remains fucked.
oh well, if you know that seattle scene, you should
focus on that pulse.
more ramblings of manny
peace bro
(This is sum knowledge from my Marina Homie Man-Dog (in the UK). True words from the prophet. where can I find beakers? u know the magnum 44 like markers but with paint instead of ink. also im starting to write "verse". can i bite some of your styles. please scan them to me
(Hmm. I am not sure what a beaker is but I used to find small cans at hobby stores that have detail paint for models. You need to be 18 to buy the cans though. "Verse" is a tight tag. Sorry about the styles, you wouldn't want my stuff, it is too old school, get some graff mags and practice dem letters over and over and over again before you go out.)

Hey Brian,
What's up boo? This is Diamoness, and I just wanted to
respond to the E-Mail that u recently sent me. I completely agree that
Proposition 21 is a bullsh* * law, and it seems to me that these days, the
government is just trying to find ways to put young people in prison. Why?
Is it a racial issue? Maybe. Or does it go beyond the color of our skin.
People seem to fear intelligent beings these days. They seem to fear what it
is that they simply do not know. A person's mentality is pure power, if
utilized, but if not, then it is useless, and a sad waste. I am 18 years
old, and have so many friends that have either been to jail, are currently in
jail, are fighting for their lives to stay out of jail, or are a part of
some illegal production, (which is what they do in order to get their
income) and/or, it is so because they were raised by the streets.
There are so many intelligent brothers out there in prison who
have talents many people could only dream of or wish for. Some were taught,
and others were blessed with them by God ever since their mothers brought
them into this world. It saddens me, and yet at the same time I get filled
with so much anger. As I write these words, spoken from no where else but
my heart, tears begin to fill my eyes. Holding them back I am, but I don't
know how much longer I will be able to. People have to take a stand,
otherwise they will be walked upon. People need to understand, otherwise
they will be "played". People need to take the time to listen to those
around them, otherwise when it's their time to speak, they won't be listened
too.
Thank you Brian, for listening. And be safe.
One.
Diamoness42

OUR COOL-HUNTERS WILL SOON BE SCOURING THE WORLD IN SEARCH OF THE WORLDS
BEST GRAFFITI. WOULD YOU LIKE TO JUDGE IT AND SET CRITERIA FOR WHAT
CONSTITUTES THE BEST.
P. Lakeman
(I am not exactly a graffiti judge but here are a few basic criteria I use in looking at pieces: (1) I don't think a piece that takes more than 4 hours to complete constitutes graffiti, (2) A dope piece shouldn't need more than four basic colors, not a bag full of krylon, (3) The letters are the most important element of the burner, characters, patterns and fades are secondary, (4) Can Control and good outlines, (5) Finally, I would have to say originality, not a trace of another persons style in your name.)

(A b-boy is defined as one that cultivates or represents one or all of the elements of hip hop. As long as you support this culture you definetely can consider yourself a b-boy. Traditionally a B-boy was considered a 'Break Boy' or 'Bronx Boy' but the term has evolved into a subculture connected to hip hop and its elements.)

Just wondering what most dj's set the height on their tonearms for heavy scratching and if the cart needs to be set to the front of the headshell or the back of it? thanks from a newbie!
Joe
(I have my antiskating at 0 and the tonearm set at around 2.5. I turn my weights around on the back for added weight and have ortofon shells. You should use Shure needles if you are going to do some heavy skratchin', the only draw back for Shure needles is the sound quality. If you are making mix tapes you might want to use a quality needle like a Ortofon nightclub.)

Respect to all homies in da house. Me and my friend want to start bombing the streets of our home city, but we do not know where to start from. Please can you suggest something. Respect dudes.
- Shimkevitch
(Well for starters I would go down to the local hobby store and get some good krylon paint. Practice on card board boxes with some cheap paint to learn some can control first so your shit down run when you put if up. I used to go out with all my cans in a easy to access backpack if you are going to burn or a simple jacket with an inside pocket. If you simply want to tag up electrical boxes and signs then you might want to get a couple of phat magnum44 or pilot markers. Good luck and don't get caught. I don't endorse any illegal activity of any kind.
P.S. rustoleum cans have some nice phat caps for fast fills.)

what does a begginer gotta do to be a b-boy?
UR - This kat is from Arab Emirates. Word!
(Hmmm, ummm. Basically Represent to the fullest for your culture. Cultivate. Educate yourself and others - Join a crew, practice and practice some more. Don't wanna be a half steppin' b-boy. A good place to start is to watch some old school flicks like Beat Street or Wild Style. You gotta have some flava to be a b-boy.

I read your essay about your experiences as a B-BOY and I must say we
have something in common... our love of HIP-HOP. I agree that HIP-HOP is a
culture, but I also think its a dance art form. I just recently received my
B.A. in dance and still there is no love for HIP-HOP at the university level.
It is perceived as a form of dance that has no technical merit such as
ballet, tap, or jazz does. Yet, for some reason not everyone can do HIP-HOP.
I am currently working on my MFA in dance because I want to teach HIP-HOP at
the university level to prove that it is a valid art form.
Anyways, my reason for e-mailing you was just to reinforce the fact we
are becoming more structured and organized. I started Break dancing at the
age of ten and then continued on to HIP-HOP. I am now twenty-five and I
don't see a time when I will ever stop. So. No its not just a phaze!

I got a picture of me, my intro rhyme, and I haven't done any graffiti in about two months (just cause it's hard for me to be in the mood for art AND spend hours tryin to do a piece). Thanx for havin' a B-boy site like this.
Grunge
(This site is strictly for b-boys and true skool headz. I don't b-boy much anymore but I am always cultivating the culture to new school peeps.)

HI,
I'm Paul and come from north of France. I want to know why we call
breakdancers B-Boys. And how can I start dancing? thank you....
Paulo
(Where do I begin - Yo, B-Boys is the original term for a break-boy or bronx-boy, not sure which came first. 'Breakdancers' is a word that the mainstream media created to describe the art form of b-boyin'. If you want to start b-boyin' you should get some videos and study em'.)

I am just a wild hiphop fan and TUPAC is my favorite artist. Can you E-mail
me with some insight on why it seems that he is not recognized by the industry
in his death as BIG E SMALLS? TO me PAC had so many other things to tell us
about where as BIG E just told us alot about a glorified sinister life, but I
AIN'T HATIN'!! i LOVE ME SOME TUPAC but my baby ain't gettin' his respect due.
Southern Girl
(We all miss both Tupac and Biggie respectively. I doubt you will see any proper recognition by the industry, sad but true.)
